of Dentistry 70th Anniversary Celebrations. September 24th to 26th, 1999
Having celebrated the Golden and Diamond Jubilee in 1979 (Sepoy Lines) and 1989 (NUH), this year's 70th year celebration was eagerly anticipated with excitement. Another 10 years have been added to the dental school's history and the organizing committee headed by A/P Jennifer Neo and A/P Grace Ong together with the hard working committee left no stone unturned to make this a memorable event. What an occasion it turned up to be. With full support from many alumni (over 300) and the trade representatives the celebrations was a huge success. As the Dean, Prof Chew Chong LIn said at the opening speech during the gala dinner, when the committee first decided to have the dinner at a grand hotel (Rirtz Carlton) in spite of the economic situation, there was some apprehension regarding the choice of venue. But he rightly pointed out that our profession has grown of age and dentists can now celebrate because we are a great profession. The three-day event also saw tremendous support to the donation drive with many alumni giving generously. The golf tournament held in conjunction with the Guild of Dental Graduates, The opening ceremony opened by the Deputy Vice Chancellor, Prof Chong Chi Tat, the Science Meeting; the Gala Dinner graced by the Senior Minister of State Dr Aileen Wong, and the public forum attracted many alumni and the public. Publicity for the celebrations was done though the radio on Radio 93.8 the "Living Room "series hosted by Petrina Kow, 3 weeks before the celebrations. The following topics were covered A/P Grace Ong, Dental Education in Singapore, Dr Kevin Foong, Crooked teeth, A/P S B Keng , Geriatric Dentistry and TMJ dysfunction and Dr Loh Fun Chee on Dental Implants. The Chinese radio also had interviews in mandarin with Dr Stephen Hsu and Dr Loh Poey Ling on dentistry. We have put up a photo gallery on the celebrations to reminisce on the occasion. Report by S.
