Dr Marlene Teo

Dr Marlene Teo graduated from the National University of Singapore in 2000, where she was the 6th dental graduate in its 63-year history to be awarded BDS Honours. Throughout her course of study, Dr Teo was awarded a total of 11 academic and clinical medals, including the Lee Kuan Yew gold medal (best student throughout course of study), the Tratman Silver Medal (Most Distinguished Graduate) and the Dr FAC Oehlers Gold Medal (Best Clinical Student). Dr Teo subsequently obtained her Masters in Periodontology from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill where her Master’s thesis was selected as one of the four finalists in the prestigious Orban competition, during the American Academy of Periodontology meeting in San Diego 2006. For the same thesis, Dr Teo was also awarded the North Carolina-AADR Turner Research award in 2006.

Dr Teo is a diplomate of the American Board of Periodontology and maintains clinical practice limited to periodontics and implantology at TP Dental Surgeons Pte Ltd. She currently holds a joint appointment as Adjunct Lecturer at the National University of Singapore and Adjunct Assistant Professor at the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill.

There have been many advances in periodontal concepts, graft materials and surgical techniques in the past few years. The first lecture will focus on simple periodontal surgical techniques that can enhance restorative outcomes. We will then focus on treating mucogingival defects such as gingival recession with various soft tissue graft techniques. Research in the past few years has focused on regeneration of the periodontium with materials such as Enamel matrix derivative and Platelet derived growth factor. Clinical and research based evidence will be presented on these new modalities of treatment. With the advent of new regenerative therapies and advances in implant therapy, dentists are suddenly faced with a variety of options for a tooth with a guarded prognosis. Are implants really the way to go? The rationale for the various modes of treatment will be explained and discussed.
