New Designations for Academic Staff
The NUS has converted to the US system of academic titling from 1st August 98. This involves new designations for academic staff. The new designations are Assistant Professor, Associate Professor and Professor. The only change being that lecturers and senior lecturers are now named Assistant Professors. to reduce confusion that the name change might bring, "Dr" is still used in official salutations for Assistant Professors. These new designations do not correlate to any NUH appointments that the staff may have.
The aim of this exercise is more than purely cosmetic. It is mainly to harmonise with the rest of the world to facilitate staff recruitment as well as to enable a fair comparison of academic status with overseas colleagues, especially during international conferences.
