Dr Winston Tan and wife on the birth of their first child (boy) on 14 May 2001.

Dr Stephen Hsu Chin-ying, Associate Professor, Department of Preventive Dentistry, who clinched the "Foundation Research Award 2001" given by the American Academics for Pediatric Dentistry (AAPD) for his project entitled, "Using Low-Energy Laser with Organic Matrix to Prevent Enamel Caries".

Freshmen and the FOC on winning 4 prizes on the dental float at the Rag & Flag 2001/02:

  • Deputy Vice Chancellor's Shield for Environmental Friendliness
  • NUSSU Shield for Best Float Presentation
  • The Vice Chancellor's Challenge Shield for Overall Best Float
  • NUSSU Shield for Best Float Design

The first three prizes were won under the Faculty Club Category

Drs Goh Siak Shyong, Leong Yoon Hee and Poon Kee Hwang of the UROP project, 2000 who walked away with the second prize at the APDSA Congress, which was held this year in Tokyo, Japan on 10-16 August 2001.
Their project is entitled, "In-Vitro Comparison of Force Consistency of Nicel-Titanium Closed Coil Springs and Elastomeric Chains". The group was supervised by A/Prof Kelvin Foong.

INTER-FACULTY TRACK & FIELD 2001

  • Year 3 student Goh Teik Suai who won the Silver Medal for Javelin and the 4th place for Discus
  • Year 1 student Teo Juin Wei who won the Silver Medal for High Jump
  • Year 1 students Tan Kian Meng, Soong Poh Luon, Quek Yeow Hsien, Joel Khoo who won the 4th place for the 4X400m relay
  • Year 1 students Soong Poh Luon, Teo Juin Wei, Simon Ng and Wong Li Beng who won the 4th place for the 4X100m relay

Assoc Prof Adrian Yap U Jin, Department of Restorative Dentistry, who received his PhD at the Commencement ceremony held on 17 September 2001.

Miss Catherine Tan Poh San, Senior Laboratory Officer, Faculty of Dentistry and Mrs Doris Wong Lai Chan, Graduate School of Dental Studies for being awarded the National Day Long Service Medal by the President of the Republic of Singapore in recognition of their dedicated service.


A Day Trip to KUKUP


The Whole Gang at Orchid Farm

The Welfare, Sports and recreation committee organised a day trip to Kukup on 29 July 2001. The first agenda, was a sumptuous "eat-all-you can" breakfast in Johor Bahru.

Next, on the itinerary was the Orchid Valley at the foothills of Pulai Mountain and then on to Kukup. At Kukup, some chose to visit the fishing village while others enjoyed a seafood lunch.

Then came the agenda everyone was looking forward to, the durian lunch at the plantation. It was a real feast with a good spread of quality durians!! The day tour ended with shopping at a hypermart and dinner in Johor Bahru.

Visiting Professors

1. Professor Andrew Sandham

He was here as a Visiting Professor in the Department of Preventive Dentistry, Faculty of Dentistry, NUS for two months from 15 July- 15 September 2001.

He is currently an international examiner for the Royal College of Dental Surgeons of Edinburgh and is a Visiting Professor in various universities in countries such as Australia, Europe, Hong Kong and Singapore.

2. Professor Graham Rex Holland

He was here as a Visiting Professor in the Department of Restorative Dentistry, Faculty of Dentistry, NUS for one month from 23 July - 23 August 2001.

He is a Professor in the Department of Cariology, Restorative Sciences and
Endodontics, School of Dentistry and Professor in the Department of Anatomy
and Cell Biology, Faculty of Medicine, University of Michigan, USA.

3. Professor Niklaus Peter Lang

He was here as a Visiting Professor in the Department of Preventive Dentistry, Faculty of Dentistry, NUS for 3 weeks from 4 -23 September, 2001.

He is the Chairman in the Department of Periodontology and Fixed Prosthodontics, University of Bern, Switzerland.

4. Professor Jack Nicholls

He is currently here as a Distinguished Visiting Professor in the Department of Restorative Dentistry, Faculty of Dentistry, NUS for two months from 28 October-19 December, 2001.

He is a Professor in Dental Materials and Bioengineering in the Department of Restorative Dentistry, University of Washington,Seattle, USA.


A Warm Welcome to New Staff

Dr Ganesh Vijay Kumar assumed duty on 2 May 2001 as Adjunct Senior Researcher in the Department of Restorative Dentistry.

Dr Sajeevinoth s/o Suseelan, Department of Preventive Dentistry,
Dr Edelmiro De Hoyos Gonzalez, Department of Restorative Dentistry
commenced their MSc candidature in July 2001.

Ms Lim Wat Seew assumed duty as Pupil Assistant Nurse on 26 July 2001 in the Faculty of Dentistry.

Dr Narendran Andrew Robinson assumed duty on 23 July 2001 as Adjunct Fellow in the Department of Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery.

Ms Sarah Cunaraswamy joined the Dental Centre as Senior Dental Surgery Assistant on 1 August 2001.

Dr Meng Mei Jin will be with us from 4 August - 31 December 2001 as Research Assistant to A/Prof Yeo Jinn Fei.

Mr Jerry Hoe Kah Eng assumed duty as Systems Analyst, Dentistry CITA on 20 August 2001.

Ms Poornima M.S. assumed duty as Patient Care Assistant in the Dental Centre on 20 August 2001.

Ms Karen Kang assumed duty as Senior Dental Surgery Assistant in Clinic 1 on 20 August 2001.

SNO Ng Gek Lang will convert to full-time employment as of 8 September 2001.

Dr Chan Nyat Chee assumed duty on 17 September 2001 as Senior Consultant in the Dental Centre, NUH

Ms Ng Bee Wee, assumed duty as Administrative Officer in the Dean's Office on 26 September 2001.

Mr Chan Swee Heng assumed duty as Senior Laboratory Officer on 1 October 2001. Mr Chan's responsibilities include maintenance of research laboratories and equipment.

Mr Raju s/o S Solaiappan assumed duty as Operations Support Officer in the Faculty of Dentistry on 9 October 2001.
