HELP TO PRODUCE SINGAPORE’S FUTURE DENTISTS

2009 promises to be an extraordinary year.

The Faculty of Dentistry marks a historic milestone this year as we celebrate 80 years of Dental Education.

From a humble department within the KE VII College of Medicine in 1929 to its attainment of faculty status in 1966, and now among the leading dental schools in the region, the faculty has come far and achieved much. Riding on the aspirations and contributions of so many individuals over the years – staff, students and alumni, the Faculty continues to produce outstanding dental professionals whom we hope will be leaders in Clinical Care and advance the Science and Art of Dentistry as well as give back by Teaching the next generation.

2009 also heralds a period of unprecedented financial and economic uncertainty globally. Singapore is unfortunately not spared. A January 2009 survey of our undergraduate cohort revealed that 38% of respondents are surviving on a per capita household income of < S$800.   We expect the number of needy students to increase - as the Faculty expands its undergraduate intake in the coming years - and their needs to increase as the worsening global economic crisis exacts its toll.

The generosity of alumni and donors in supporting financially needy students up to this point is much appreciated – but more needs to be done!

Currently ad-hoc gifts are the main source of our Dental Bursary Fund. This expendable fund will last a few years – with bursary recipients receiving quantums ranging from a few hundred dollars to $1,800. In the last 6 years, a total of 46 recipients have benefitted from your generosity with the bursaries going towards defraying tuition fees. While we would like to help each and every deserving student with a larger quantum, we are constrained by the erratic funding stream that fluctuates with the economy.

A steady fixed income for disbursement every year would be the ideal. This would only be possible with a large endowed capital fund. For example, an endowed sum of $250,000, together with an equivalent government matching grant, will generate an annual interest income of between $20,000 to $25,000, - sufficient to support 10 bursaries in perpetuity.

We therefore felt that a most worthy cause to rally around during this challenging and extra-ordinary 80th Anniversary Year would be the Faculty of Dentistry 80th Anniversary Bursary Fund campaign.  The details are in the brochure attached.

Please give this appeal your full consideration and make a contribution. Your gift can be pivotal in transforming deserving students into outstanding professional colleagues and leaders for Dentistry in Singapore. Your support will build on the proud legacy and achievements of the Faculty of the past 80 years and helppropel it to greater heights.

Your generosity in this extraordinary time – will indeed be extraordinary!

Sincerely,

Associate Professor Keson Tan

Dean, Faculty of Dentistry
