Research Overview

Our Central Research Theme lies in the development of human embryonic stem cells as a model to study craniofacial development, and deriving clinically applicable cell types for broad applications in craniofacial tissue engineering and regenerative medicine. From the translation perspective, our research encompasses the derivation and characterization of clinically applicable cell types from human embryonic stem cells including cranial neural crest cells, mesenchymal and endothelial progenitors through our knowledge of embryonic development, and developing their use for cell-based therapies, and in tissue engineering through studies of lineage analysis, self-assembled tissue formation and cell-materials interactions.  Our research is multi-disciplinary by expertise and nature, and focused on developing and combining stem cells and biomaterials as effective and innovative therapeutics and products that are of clinical and industrial relevance.
