Faculty UROP Day 2018

The annual Undergraduate Research Opportunities Programme (UROP) Day presentation for 2018 took place on Friday, 16 November at the Dental Auditorium. We were honoured to have A/Prof Tan Kai Soo as Chairperson and Prof Monty Duggal, Dr Toh Wei Seong and Dr Sayaka Tada on the panel of judges. This half-day event marked the final leg of the final year dental students’ research findings presentation – a culmination of their hard work and dedicated effort made in the last one and a half years during which many poster and oral presentations were made.

The purpose of UROP is to promote and develop research interest in every undergraduate student within the Faculty. It also aims to allow students and faculty members to interact so as to foster ties in performing the research work and providing the opportunity to acquire skills for the intellectual process of inquiry. From AY2012, in recognition of students’ diversity of interests and different learning styles, the Faculty decided to offer an alternative programme, Clinical Elective Programme (CEP) that would cater to the students’ individual interests rather than rigidly impose compulsory research training on them. The purpose of the CEP is to permit students with interests in dental specialties to gain a deeper understanding in a particular subject through structured clinical attachments (clinical electives).

The event started with students taking questions on their respective posters from the audience, followed by them making a 3-minute oral presentation each. This format provided a platform for students to gain experience in preparing effective posters to illustrate their project findings, present their findings to an audience as well as address questions related to their project.

We wish to express our appreciation to our students, supervisors and those who have contributed and participated in UROP Day 2018 in any way. We hope this programme can spur our students’ interest to pursue research in greater depth.
