Periodontology

The Periodontology course consists of lectures, tutorials, demonstrations and clinical sessions. The course runs from the second year through to the fourth year.

Syllabus: The study of the periodontium in health and disease states: aetiology; pathogenesis and epidemiology of periodontal disease; inter-relationship between periodontal diseases and systemic conditions; endodontics and restorative dentistry; role of occlusion in periodontal diseases. Periodontal therapy - mechanical and chemical plaque control, surgical management of periodontal defects, occlusal therapy and maintenance therapy.

Clinically, students are expected to complete plaque control therapy for periodontal patients as well as assist in periodontal surgeries. Clinical competencies must be completed before a candidate is eligible to sit the Final Professional Examination.

Examination: Questions on periodontology will be included in a three-hour paper known as Preventive Dentistry I.
