Synopsis
Single tooth implants are increasingly advocated
as an alternative to root canal treatment, largely on the basis that an implant
is a more “predictable” procedure. While a comparison of treatment
outcomes has some relevance, the focus of the decision making process should
be on appropriate treatment planning. The decision to extract a tooth and provide
a prosthetic replacement should not be made lightly, and requires evidence
firstly of a poor prognosis for the existing tooth and secondly of the long-term
prospects for its replacement.
