In 1997, the Faculty crossed an important milestone by developing the first patent arising from a project on a fibre-reinforced composite product with graded stiffness jointly conducted with the Institute of Materials Research and Engineering (IMRE).

In 1999, a second patent on a new filler technology for glass ionomer cements also developed jointly with IMRE was filed.
