Director

The current Director of the Division of Graduate Dental Studies is Professor Chew Chong Lin.

Introduction

Established in 1970, the Division of Graduate Dental Studies was known as the School of Postgraduate Dental studies (PGDS) until 1997 when its name was changed to Graduate School of Dental Studies. This move was initiated to keep in line with the other postgraduate schools of the university. The main objectives of the graduate school are :

  • To provide residency training programmes leading to postgraduate qualification in dentistry.
  • To promote continuing dental education.
  • To develop research in dentistry.

Prior to 1989, the Master of Dental Surgery (MDS) degree did not require candidates to go through a structured training programme - they had to take two examinations.

Candidates had to take a Primary MDS examination similar to the Fellowship in Dental Surgery (FDS) Part I, thereafter, they were allowed to register for the Final MDS examination after two years of relevant clinical postings or four years of general dental practice. Three courses were available - Oral Surgery, Operative Dentistry and Prosthetic Dentistry.

In 1989, a two year structured programme leading to the Final MDS examination was introduced. At the same time, the Operative and Prosthetic Dentistry courses were replaced by a course in Prosthodontics. In 1992, a 3-year Orthodontics Residency Training programme was introduced.

Since May 1994, the Division of Graduate Dental Studies offers four three-year residency training programmes. They are Endodontics, Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, Orthodontics and Prosthodontics. The Periodontology Residency Training Programme was introducted in July 2002.

The MDS is the most popular degree offered by the Graduate School. However, we also offer three research degrees - the Doctor of Dental Surgery (DDS), Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) and Master of Science (MSc). We currently have five students enrolled in the research programmes.

NUS Extension

Apart from offering higher degrees, the Graduate School has also expanded its scope and involvement in the professional life of the dentist. The Continuing Dental Education (CDE) programme under the leadership of Professor Chew Chong Lin works closely with other professional bodies like the Singapore Dental Association (SDA), National University Hospital (NUH), National Dental Centre (NDC) and Specialist Associations to organise courses, meetings, symposia and evening lectures for dental practitioners. The CDE committee also organises weekend "hands-on" courses for general practitioners.

These courses usually focus on new techniques and advancements in clinical dentistry, like Perfecting the art of Endodontics, Porcelain Veneers and Periodontal Instrumentation Workshop. Together with NUH, a one-day clinical symposium is held every year.

Inter-faculty seminars on multi-disciplinary subjects are also organised. Last year we co-hosted such seminars with the Engineering and Medical Faculties.

Postgraduate Programmes

The School offers structured residency training programmes in the following five specialties:

Qualifications

The Postgraduate programmes are open to dental graduates who have at least 2 years full-time clinical experience in general dentistry.

The structured training programme leads to a degree of Master of Dental Surgery (MDS). It aims to provide the residents with:

  • The experience of treating a wide range of cases in each specialty.
  • The ability to carry out independent research investigation and critically evaluate scientific publications.
  • The opportunity to work with other specialists in the care of patients requiring interdisciplinary therapy.
