The NUCOHS Tooth Tissue Bank (NTTB) is an enterprise that supports biomedical research projects by keeping a ready supply of donated extracted teeth so that researchers have a ready supply of teeth samples before they even begin on their projects.
Launched in January 2021, the NTTB is a collaboration between the Faculty of Dentistry, National University of Singapore (NUS) and the National University Centre for Oral Health, Singapore (NUCOHS), and supported by the Oral Care, Health Innovations and Designs Singapore (ORCHIDS).
The NTTB is conveniently located at the NUCOHS building and is managed by the Faculty’s Clinical Research Unit (CRU). The team collects teeth daily, disinfecting them by removing blood, plaque and tartar before committing them to long-term storage.
The team will also review research studies requesting teeth samples and manage the teeth inventory. All tooth donations are voluntary, and donors’ privacy is respected. With the NTTB, researchers can be assured that every type of tooth is available and ready for their research endeavours.
If you are interested to find out more about tooth donation, you can contact us at FODCRU@nus.edu.sg.
Dental patients scheduled to undergo extraction at NUCOHS can donate their extracted teeth to the NUCOHS Tooth Tissue Bank.
If you are keen to donate, you can inform your dentist about donating your extracted teeth, and they will advise on the procedures.
First, you will be required to fill up a written consent to donate your extracted tooth. Your tooth/teeth will then be collected at the NUCOHS dental clinic after the extraction procedure. There will be no further contact for consent required in the future.
Your extracted tooth/teeth will be de-identified and transported to NUCOHS Tooth Tissue Bank for storage until they are needed for oral health-related research.
Extracted teeth are used in various research studies conducted in the biomedical field beyond the scope of dentistry. These studies aim to shed light on understanding oral and medical diseases, regenerate tissues to improve overall health and benefit population well-being.
Your tooth extraction procedure will be routinely conducted in the National University Centre for Oral Health Singapore (NUCOHS) dental clinics. After the procedure, you may experience general post-surgical effects such as pain, inflammation, bruising, bleeding, and infection. Some pain, swelling, and bruising in the area may also be expected, but these should subside with time. If the side effects worsen, please get in touch with your dentist.
Only your name will be collected during consent taking. No other personal and health information will be collected.
Consent cannot be withdrawn as once we have collected your tooth/teeth; we will de-identify; thus we won’t be able to retrieve the tooth/teeth that you have donated.
