The NUCOHS Tooth Tissue Bank (NTTB) is an enterprise that supports biomedical research projects by keeping a ready supply of donated stem cells so that researchers have a ready supply of samples before they even begin their projects.
Launched in October 2022, the NTTB is a collaboration between the Faculty of Dentistry, National University of Singapore (NUS) and the National University Centre for Oral Health, Singapore (NUCOHS), and supported by the Oral Care, Health Innovations and Designs Singapore (ORCHIDS).
The NTTB is conveniently located at the NUCOHS building and is managed by the Faculty’s Clinical Research Unit (CRU). The team actively collects donated teeth daily for extraction, purification and long-term cryopreservation storage of stem cells for future research.
The team will also review research studies requesting stem cell samples and manage the inventory accordingly. All stem cell donations are voluntary, and donors’ privacy is respected. With NTTB, researchers can be assured that stem cells are available and ready for their research endeavours. If you are interested in learning more about stem cell donation, you can contact us at FODCRU@nus.edu.sg.
All NUCOHS dental patients who have scheduled dental extraction at NUCOHS can donate their extracted teeth to our NUCOHS Tooth Tissue Bank.
If you are keen to donate, you can inform your dentist about donating your extracted teeth, and they will advise on the procedures.
First, you will be required to fill up a written consent to donate your extracted tooth. Your tooth/teeth will then be collected at the NUCOHS dental clinic after the extraction procedure. There will be no further contact for consent required in the future.
Your extracted tooth/teeth will be de-identified and transported to NUCOHS Tooth Tissue Bank for storage until they are needed for oral health-related research.
Your tooth extraction is a routine procedure conducted at the National University Centre for Oral Health, Singapore (NUCOHS) dental clinics. After the procedure, you may experience general post-surgical effects such as pain, inflammation, bruising, bleeding, and infection. Some pain, swelling, and bruising in the area may also be expected, but these should subside with time. If the side effects worsen, please get in touch with your dentist.
Only your name will be collected during consent taking. No other personal and health information will be collected.
Throughout the study, utmost precaution will be taken to protect your personal data (i.e. your name). The data will be kept secure, and your extracted tooth/teeth will be de-identified upon donation.
Consent cannot be withdrawn once we have collected your tooth/teeth. We will de-identify, and will not be able to retrieve the tooth/teeth after you donate.
Stem cells extracted from donated teeth are used in various research studies conducted in the biomedical field beyond the scope of dentistry. These studies aim to shed light on understanding oral and medical diseases, regenerate tissues to improve overall health and benefit population well-being.
