leading to the Bachelor of Dental Surgery (BDS) degree. Students who consistently perform well in their Professional Examinations across the four years may be considered for the BDS (Honours) degree. Upon graduation, the NUS BDS degree is recognised by the Singapore Dental Council for registration to practise in Singapore.<br \/><br \/>The four-year programme is spread across the pre-clinical (BDS1 and 2) and clinical (BDS3 and 4) phases. During the pre-clinical phase, undergraduates gain knowledge across a broad range of Applied Sciences, and Dental Sciences. All first and second-year undergraduates will also engage in interprofessional learning through the Common Curriculum for Health Professional Education. Through this, Dentistry undergraduates learn together with their peers from Medicine, Nursing and Pharmacy and equip themselves with the necessary knowledge and skills to address real-world health issues through an inter-disciplinary approach. This is complemented by extensive hands-on simulation and laboratory-based training to prepare them for the clinical management of patients in the latter half of the programme.<br \/><br \/>During their clinical phase, undergraduates manage the oral health needs of patients across all ages and provide them with a comprehensive range of dental treatment, under close staff supervision. As part of the clinical training, relevant aspects of Medicine, Surgery and Paediatrics are also included in the third year of the programme.<br \/><br \/>The dental graduates should be skilled in diagnosing and treating oral and dental diseases. They must be adept at applying research and new technologies to clinical care and be committed to continuous education while upholding professional, ethical, and social data-title-link=\"common-curriculum-tab\">\n\t\t\t\t        <p>From August 2023, NUS Dentistry in collaboration with the Alice Lee Centre for Nursing Studies, NUS Medicine, Swee Hock Saw School of Public Health, and the Department of Pharmacy also introduced the new inter-professional programme for all BDS1 and BDS2 students.<\/p><p>The new Common Curriculum for Healthcare Professional Education ensures that our educational objectives are harmonised with the future vision of healthcare, emphasising preventive healthcare and the utilisation of technology and analytics to support elderly in living independently.<\/p><p>First-year students from Dentistry will collaborate with other first-year students from Medicine, Pharmacy and Nursing to take five specially designed courses together as part of their learning journey. The NUS Common Curriculum, which is to be completed in the first two years of their candidature, will complement the existing BDS programme. At every milestone, there are specific competencies which they will need to accomplish before proceeding to the next. In the simulation laboratory, the undergraduates are exposed to a wide range of clinical dental procedures.<\/p><p>During this pre-clinical training, they translate the theory they have learned into practical applications on the simulation models. Subsequently in the clinical years, the undergraduates apply the pre-clinical training to manage the oral health needs of patients under close supervision.
