Charting the Course: Dentistry's Vision for Tomorrow

On the evening of 27 March 2024, the NUS Faculty of Dentistry hosted its alumni from diverse backgrounds at an open event exploring the future of dentistry at a lecture titled "Dentistry – What Lies Ahead".

Prof Chris Peck delivered an engaging talk on the future of dentistry.

The session commenced with a presentation delivered by Professor Chris Peck, the Dean of NUS Dentistry, focusing on the evolving landscape of dentistry. Prof Peck delved into the remarkable advancements in biomedical sciences and technology, highlighting staggering statistics such as the annual publication of over 120,000 research articles in dentistry alone. Attendees explored how these advancements are changing the field, including the development of new materials and medications and the use of cutting-edge equipment and treatments.

Central to the discourse was the recognition of Dentistry's changing landscape in response to societal shifts, especially in the context of a super-aged nation. As healthcare needs evolve within communities, dentistry stands at a pivotal juncture, tasked with developing strategies to enhance health and well-being through comprehensive oral, dental, and craniofacial healthcare services.  Importantly, there was discussion on the need for a much greater preventive focus, and different models to achieve this.

and opportunities within the dentistry profession.

The event emphasised important takeaways, urging our alumni to understand and support the crucial role of dental research in clinical practice and evidence-based methods for better patient outcomes. Interprofessional collaboration, managing those at higher risk of poorer oral health, and cultural competency were also explored, acknowledging the interconnectedness of healthcare fields and the importance of building partnerships with various stakeholders. Additionally, the adoption of a biopsychosocial model was highlighted, with the aim of delivering holistic care by addressing biological, psychological, and social factors to enhance overall patient well-being.

As the evening drew to a close, attendees engaged in a Q&A (Questions-and-Answers) session with Prof Peck to deliberate on critical issues that will redefine dentistry in the years to come. Attendees shared that the event offered them valuable insights and empowered them to align their practices with emerging trends.

"This talk shed light on the evolving landscape of dentistry, underscoring the need for forward-thinking in our field. I learned many things and realised that collaborating closely with dental therapists not only optimises our time as dentists but also offers diverse perspectives, fostering a synergy that propels us forward in delivering exceptional care,” shared NUS Dentistry alumnus Dr Chua Meng Khiang.

“The talk was both engaging and informative. Delving into the challenges and opportunities that would impact the way dentists manage patients' oral health, Prof Peck emphasised the importance of applying a biopsychosocial model to enhance person-centred and integrated care. This insight-packed discussion not only piqued interest but also provided practical guidance for dentists to adapt their practices and align with emerging trends in the field,” added NUS Dentistry alumna Dr Jennifer Goh.
