Congratulations to Asst. Prof. Nileshkumar Dubey at the Interstellar Initiative 2021 – 2022!

Assistant Professor Nileshkumar Dubey and his team were the co-recipient of one of the three winning initiatives at the Interstellar Initiative 2021 – 2022.

The Interstellar Initiative is a platform jointly organised by the New York Academy of Sciences and the Japan Agency for Medical Research and Development (AMED) to recognise the world’s most promising Early Career Investigators, and provide crucial incentives and a tangible platform to connect with peers from related but distinct disciplines to help address global societal challenges.

With Cardiovascular diseases (CVDs) being one of the world’s leading cause of death (31% of all global deaths) according to the World Health Organisation (WHO), the team explored creating a sensitive, reliable, cost-effective diagnostic platform that could also help in the real-time detection and monitoring of the health of CVD patients.

Consisting of Dr. Hongwu Wang, an Assistant Professor from University of Oklahoma Health Sciences Center and an expert on Wearable and mHealth technology, and Dr. Christian Penaloza, a team leader from Mirai Innovation Research Institute, Japan who is an expert on Brain Machine Interfaces, Robotics, the team’s 6-month long project centred around the development of non-invasive saliva biomarker monitoring biosensor to detect cardiovascular disease.

The win at the Interstellar Initiative 2021-2022 is but the first step for the team as they look to further develop and iterate on their biosensor.

Nonetheless, Asst. Prof. Dubey is excited at its prospect and grateful for the support of his peers from the wider NUS community who have helped made the project a success.

“I would like to Thank Prof Li Fong Yau, Sam from NUS Department of Chemistry and his postdoc Dr. Varun Rai for providing us support in this endeavour,” shared Asst. Prof. Dubey.
