Management of Deep Caries – Vital Pulp Therapy or Root Canal Treatment

Managing Challenging Cases in Elderly Patients

With increasing life expectancy and retention of natural teeth, the elderly patients present with unique set of oral health issues that need to be addressed. Oral healthcare professionals play a critical role in maintaining oral function, which in turn ensure better quality of life for such patients.

The prevalence of root caries has been shown to increase with age. Such cervical lesions are not easy to manage due to their location and proximity to the gingiva, making it challenging for preventive and restorative access.

Many of the elderly patients also rely on removable prostheses to replace their missing teeth and restore their function. Careful considerations must be placed on the fabrication of dentures to ensure patient comfort and acceptance.
