The Clinical Research Unit (CRU) aims to lead and facilitate clinical research within the National University Health System (NUHS), the National University Centre for Oral Health Singapore (NUCOHS) and the NUS Faculty of Dentistry. We strive to translate laboratory discoveries into innovative clinical care solutions through collaborations with academics and industry partners.

CRU conducts clinical research studies to investigate or develop new treatment solutions and medication, as well as examine the causes of an illness. Examples of studies include clinical and device trials, imaging analysis and data/sample collection. We are involved in all phases of the clinical trials and manage the NUCOHS Tooth Tissue Bank.

Our research initiatives seek to establish the links between systemic conditions and oral diseases to develop personalised clinical care standards and advance novel therapeutic strategies. We are dedicated to enhancing our capacities to offer the best assistance to all clinical research and trial studies. We look forward to opportunities to collaborate with you and play a role in promoting dental research locally and globally.

Ms Choo Si Yi is managing Clinical Research Unit (CRU) and NUCOHS Tooth Tissue Bank (NTTB) together with two Clinical Research Coordinators, Ms Ong Mei Ting and Ms Celeste Tan Thiang Ju. The unit is presently supporting more than 20 clinical research projects.

Ms Choo was inspired to explore clinical research after graduating in Biological Science from Nanyang Technological University in 2014. She joined SingHealth and subsequently worked at a leading multinational corporation managing global and regional clinical research projects. She joined the Faculty in 2019. Ms Choo believes that the mission of CRU is to contribute to patients’ health and well-being by providing Principal Investigators with the support to develop and conduct clinical research projects which will translate to therapeutic solutions to benefit humanity.

Ms Ong Mei Teng has been with CRU for more than five years. Every clinical research project involves communicating with internal and external stakeholders to ensure studies are well designed and executed according to strict regulations while managing research participants and ensuring that the data collected is of the highest quality. Before this, she was a Dental Surgery Assistant at NUH Dental Centre (now known as NUCOHS). It was curiosity that made her switch jobs. She said, “In research, we encounter many different dental complications. It is fascinating, and I will search for it online to find out more.”

Ms Celeste Tan Thiang Ju followed a similar path as Ms Ong, having previously been a Dental Surgery Assistant at NUH Dental Centre. In her current role at CRU, she can witness the full spectrum of the research study process from the start to eventual completion. “I have gained insights into clinical research’s inner workings, such as patient recruitment and the dos and don’ts according to the regulations. With much more for me to learn – I am excited to be part of this team!” she shared.
