The Faculty of Dentistry held its annual Faculty Undergraduate Research Opportunities Programme (UROP) Day on 17 November 2017, at the National University Hospital (NUH) Dental Auditorium.
The UROP provides an opportunity for students to embark on small-group research projects in their second year of dental school, under the mentorship of faculty staff. It serves to foster research interest amongst our undergraduates and develop skills critical for the intellectual process of scientific inquiry. An alternative to UROP, the clinical elective programme (CEP) comprises structured clinical attachments to cater to the students’ individual interests in Paediatric Dentistry or Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery. Both programmes culminate in the presentation of research findings on Faculty UROP Day in the students’ final year.
This year, 1 CEP and 13 UROP groups presented their projects to faculty members and fellow dental undergraduates. The panel of judges comprised three full-time faculty members, A/P Yeo Jin Fei, Dr Intekhab Islam and Dr Gopu Sriram. Projects supervised by Dr Vinicius Rosa, Dr Fu Jia Hui, and Dr Jaya Seneviratne clinched first, second and third places respectively.
We would like to congratulate all final-year students and faculty supervisors on the successful completion of the research projects, and hope their experience will be a source of inspiration for fellow dental students to explore new research ideas in the future.
