Our 13th Faculty of Dentistry Symposium was held on 27 and 28 January 2018. Over the weekend, more than 230 participants congregated at the Grand Copthorne Waterfront Hotel for a series of enriching dental and medical lectures that adhered to the theme of Pain. The number of people afflicted by pain – chronic pain in particular – far exceeds the number of those suffering from well-known conditions such as diabetes, cancer, cardiovascular disease and stroke. Recognition that this is a global healthcare problem has sparked research interest and accelerated research output. The team of speakers at this symposium, comprising Associate Professor Donald Nixdorf, Dr Tan Hee Hon, Dr James Tan Wen Tien, Dr Lui Yit Shiang, Dr Kewin Siah Tien Ho and Dr Tay Kwang Hui, shared valuable insights gleaned from these recent research efforts. The surprising interactions among various chronic pain conditions across multiple dental and medical disciplines were highlighted. It is hoped that greater collaboration across specialties may someday lead us to eureka moments sorely needed to help the often-neglected group of chronic pain patients.
