The Faculty of Dentistry offers Graduate residency training programmes in six clinical specialties, namely Endodontics, Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery, Orthodontics, Paediatric Dentistry, Periodontology and Prosthodontics. These full-time three-year programmes, which culminate in the Master of Dental Surgery (MDS), consist of clinical, didactic and research components.

Endodontics

The Endodontic Residency Training Programme is a 3-year full-time NUS curriculum comprising didactic, research and clinical training.

The goal of the training programme is to prepare graduates to be proficient endodontic practitioners and competent academics with clinical acumen. At the National University Centre for Oral Health (NUCOHS) where education, clinical service and research activities are housed under one roof, residents are encouraged to hone their clinical skills, challenge accepted norms, apply their knowledge in teaching and conduct meaningful research under the guidance of oral health scientists and clinician scholars.

Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery

Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery

The Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery Residency Training Programme is a 3-year full-time NUS curriculum comprising didactic, research and clinical training.

This programme enables graduates to acquire a strong foundation and practical experience in the specialty, equipping them with the competence to pursue higher specialty training. It also prepares them to effectively interface with other disciplines in the interdisciplinary management of patients, including those requiring orthognathic surgery and cleft lip and palate treatment. Additionally, residents gain experience in conducting research, critically evaluating scientific publications, and presenting clinical and research work in journals and at conferences.

Orthodontics

Orthodontics

The Orthodontics Residency Training Programme is a 3-year full-time NUS curriculum comprising didactic, research and clinical training.

The goal of the programme aims to train dentists in the science and art of orthodontics, cultivating future specialists and leaders in both academia and clinical practice. Structured as a rigorous 3-year Master of Dental Surgery course, the programme provides a comprehensive academic, clinical, and research-based education.

Paediatric Dentistry

Paediatric Dentistry

The Paediatric Dentistry Residency Training Programme is a 3-year full-time NUS curriculum comprising didactic, research and clinical training.

The programme is administered by the Division of Graduate Dental Studies, Faculty of Dentistry. The clinical and didactic training will be conducted at the NUS Faculty of Dentistry. The clinical training is also conducted at the School Dental Centre (Health Promotion Board) and National Dental Centre.

Periodontology

Periodontology

The Periodontology Residency Training Programme is a 3-year full-time NUS curriculum comprising didactic, research and clinical training.

The programme is administered by the Division of Graduate Dental Studies, Faculty of Dentistry. The Clinical component of the programme will be conducted at the NUS Faculty of Dentistry and the National Dental Centre. Teaching will be undertaken by Private Practitioners specialising in the area of Periodontology and Implant Dentistry, staff from the Faculty of Dentistry and National Dental Centre.

Prosthodontics

Prosthodontics

The Prosthodontics Residency Training Programme is a 3-year full-time NUS curriculum comprising didactic, research and clinical training.

Residents enrolled in this programme will be trained at the NUS Faculty of Dentistry and the National Dental Centre.

This Graduate Diploma programmes provide scientific grounding and clinical training, and is accredited by the Singapore Dental Council to be displayable qualifications.

Dental Implantology

Dental Implantology

The Graduate Diploma in Dental Implantology, offered by the Centre for Advanced Dental Education, is aimed at providing a sound scientific grounding and clinical training in implant dentistry. This two-year part-time programme is designed mainly for general dental practitioners who are interested in the field of dental implantology. The Graduate Diploma is accredited by the Singapore Dental Council as a “Displayable Additional Qualification (AQ)”.

Geriatric Dentistry

Geriatric Dentistry

Singapore is facing a rapidly ageing population. Oral health is an important part of the older adult’s overall health and wellbeing. It contributes towards effective chewing, healthy nutrition, speech, social confidence and better cognitive and functional capacity in the elderly. The burden of oral disease in old age is high. This is further complicated by co-existing chronic conditions such as diabetes, hypertension, dementia and polypharmacy.

The Graduate Diploma in Geriatric Dentistry is specially designed for dental surgeons to receive additional training to deliver evidence-informed care to the elderly.

Master of Science (MSc)

Master of Science (MSc)

The NUS Faculty of Dentistry offers a comprehensive research programme which leads to the Master of Science (MSc) degree.

The Faculty’s three key research themes are Value-Driven Care, Novel Diagnostics and Therapeutics, and Craniofacial and Oral Health Surveillance. These are driven by research groups with expertise in Biomaterials and Tissue EngineeringMicrobiology and ImmunologyPopulation Oral Health and Services Research and Precision Dentistry.

Research students may be admitted as full-time or part-time students. However, international students on student pass must pursue their studies on a full-time basis. The minimum period of candidature is 1 year and the maximum period is 3 years for both full-time and part-time options.

Important: Research candidature does not involve any clinical work in Singapore. Research students are also not permitted to perform clinical work during their time in Singapore.

Doctor of Philosophy (PhD)

The NUS Faculty of Dentistry offers a comprehensive research programme which leads to the Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) degree.
