National University Centre of Health, Singapore (NUCOHS) Tooth Tissue Bank (Clinical Processes)

Overview

Launched in January 2021, the NUCOHS Tooth Tissue Bank (NTTB) is a collaboration between the Faculty of Dentistry and the National University Centre for Oral Health, Singapore (NUCOHS). The NTTB provides well-preserved dental tissues to support the faculty’s research mission to advance oral and craniofacial research.

All tooth donations to the NTTB are voluntary, and the privacy of donors is always respected.

FAQ

1. Can I donate my extracted tooth/teeth?

Dental patients scheduled to undergo extraction at NUCOHS can donate their extracted teeth to the NUCOHS Tooth Tissue Bank.

If you are keen to donate, you can inform your dentist about donating your extracted teeth, and they will advise on the procedures.

2. Is there any examination I have to pass to gain admission in your programme?

Your tooth extraction procedure will be routinely conducted in the National University Centre for Oral Health Singapore (NUCOHS) dental clinics. After the procedure, you may experience general post-surgical effects such as pain, inflammation, bruising, bleeding, and infection. Some pain, swelling, and bruising in the area may also be expected, but these should subside with time. If the side effects worsen, please get in touch with your dentist.

3. Will my personal information and health information be collected?

Only your name will be collected during consent taking. No other personal and health information will be collected.

4. What happens to my donated extracted tooth/teeth?

Your extracted tooth/teeth will be de-identified and transported to NUCOHS Tooth Tissue Bank for storage until they are needed for oral health-related research.

Extracted teeth are used in various research studies conducted in the biomedical field beyond the scope of dentistry. These studies aim to shed light on understanding oral and medical diseases, regenerate tissues to improve overall health and benefit population well-being.

Consent cannot be withdrawn as once we have collected your tooth/teeth; we will de-identify; thus we won’t be able to retrieve the tooth/teeth that you have donated.

6. Who can I contact for more information on the NUCOHS Tooth Tissue Bank?
