Bursaries

Scholarships

The George Y Soh Scholarship was established in October 2012 through an endowed gift from Dr George Soh, an alumnus of the NUS Faculty of Dentistry. Dr Soh spent 12 years teaching at the University, contributing to the nurturing of many cohorts of dental students. His generous gift ensures that his alma mater continues to attract talents.

The scholarship is to be awarded to a student who is undertaking his/her second or third year in the Bachelor of Dental Surgery programme. The scholarship will be tenable for one year.

Criteria

Academic Excellence
Candidates must have passed all subjects and are within the top 50% of the class in terms of academic performance in the preceding year’s (ie. first or second year) BDS examinations.

Community Service
Candidates who have demonstrated a passion for servicing the underprivileged and/or underserved populations in the local community and have evidently made sustainable and meaningful contributions to help these segments of the local population.

Community service and outreach efforts must not be performed on an adhoc and/or once-off basis and/or contribute to(wards) academic requirement and/or credits and/or activities organized by for profit organisations.

Nationality
Priority will be given to Singapore citizens, followed by Singapore Permanent Residents who have completed their National Service. In the case of Singapore Permanent Residents, Malaysians will have priority.

Financial need
Assessment of candidates with financial need will be based on the University’s selection criteria.

The BDS 71 Scholarship was established through the funds collected by the BDS Class of 1971.

The scholarship is to be awarded to a student who is undertaking his/her final year in the Bachelor of Dental Surgery programme. The scholarship will be tenable for one year.

Criteria

The best overall Dentistry student based on results of the Third Professional BDS Examination, Clinical Perfomance as well as involvement in extra-curricular activities.

In 2019, the Faculty of Dentistry received an endowed gift of S$150,000 to establish the Ho Kee Hai Coden Specialists Scholarship.

The scholarship is to be awarded to a student who is undertaking his/her final year in the Bachelor of Dental Surgery programme. The scholarship will be tenable for one year.

Criteria

Based on best aggregate results for Year 1, Year 2 and Year 3 Bachelor of Dental Surgery exams;

Pass all subjects in the Year 1, Year 2 and Year 3 Bachelor of Dental Surgery exams;

No record of disciplinary issues; and

Demonstrable engagement and contribution towards extra-curricular activities on or off campus during the first 3 years of the BDS programme.

MDS Residency Scholarships/ Sponsorships

Faculty of Dentistry Academia Talent Development Programme

Purpose

The Faculty of Dentistry Academia Talent Development Programme (“FOD ATDP Scholarship”) is part of its ongoing efforts to nurture and develop high calibre local dental alumni to prepare them for a successful career in clinical academia.

  1. Exposed to academia and its associated work while allowing them to maintain substantial clinical practice.

  2. Exposed to specific areas of interest to develop themselves further and which are aligned with the Faculty’s needs.

  3. Training opportunities to develop themselves professionally and contribute through education, research and service.

  4. Nurtured and developed to advance the Faculty’s mission and vision.
Eligibility Criteria

Applications are invited from outstanding individuals who are interested to pursue a Tenure Track academic career and meet the following conditions:

    1. Singapore Citizen (SC) or Singapore Permanent Resident (SPR);
    2. Outstanding undergraduate academic records;
    3. Aptitude for teaching and research;
    4. Completed at least one year of the MOH Undergraduate service bond at the point of emplacement on the ATDP.

Award Details

Under the auspices of the FOD ATDP Scholarship, individuals may opt for one of the following financial support platforms to support their professional development:

1. Scholarship with FOD, NUS to pursue further training in the form of a recognised qualification (up to a Masters) without salary;

or

2. Scholarship and salaried employment with FOD, NUS and concurrently pursue further training in the form of a recognised qualification (up to a Masters).

The FOD ATDP Scholarship is tenable for the minimum period required for the completion of the Graduate Diploma and up to Master degree.  Extension may be granted only on an exceptional basis.

All financial assistance will stop after 2 years (for Graduate Diploma) or 3 years (for Master’s programme).  Therefore, no-pay leave for up to 1 and/or 2 years may be granted for completion of the course of study.

NUCOHS Residency Sponsorship – NUH Learning Development Award (LDA) – Master’s and above category

Purpose

Clinicians of the National University Hospital are valued for their talents and abilities and they should be developed to their fullest potential. Opportunities are available for them to improve their skills, knowledge and competencies so as to nurture a commitment to excellence, provide quality services to patients and enhance healthcare standards in Singapore.

The NUS Faculty of Dentistry’s Master of Dental Surgery (MDS) Programme is one of the courses sponsored under the NUCOHS Residency Sponsorship – NUH Learning Development Award (LDA) – Master’s and above category.

Eligible employees may now apply for the LDA to pursue the MDS programme in Academic Year 2025/26.

Eligibility Criteria

Applications are invited from outstanding individuals who are interested to pursue a Tenure Track academic career and meet the following conditions:

  • Must not be a recipient of any sponsorship leading to a formal qualification including those offered by the Ministry of Health (MOH) for the past 3 years.
  • Employees with existing bond obligations will also need to serve out at least 50% of their bond obligation before they may apply for another sponsorship.
  • Singaporean at the point of application.

 

Note: Applicants who do not fulfil any requirement except citizenship may be considered on a case-by-case basis.

Bond and Study Duration

Successful applicants will be appointed as Dental Officers (DOs) in NUCOHS for the duration of the MDS programme.

* Currently, dental graduates enter clinical service as DOs, and are bonded with MOH Holdings (MOHH) for a period of 4 years upon graduation from the Faculty. Only DOs who have completed at least 2 years of this clinical service qualify to apply for the specialist (postgraduate) training.
