Undergraduate Overseas Elective Programme (Inbound)


About the Programme

The Overseas Elective Programme (Inbound) offers overseas undergraduate dental students a one-week attachment to attend lectures, case presentations, and observe clinical and laboratory sessions, providing insights into dental education at NUS. Participants will not be able to perform treatment on any patient in their third and final-year of the programme.

Eligibility

  • Applicants must be bona-fide undergraduate students of an overseas dental school.  
  • Applicants are required to submit a letter on university stationery from the parent university confirming their student status. This should be submitted together with the application form.
  • Application form and checklist may be emailed to Ms. Jia En YAN (yanjiaen@nus.edu.sgat least 3 (three) months prior to the start of the proposed period of attachment.

Attachment

  • Attachments are only available during the second to fourth weeks of January and July in each year.  Application for attachments outside this stipulated time frame will be reviewed on a case-by-case basis.
  • The maximum period of attachment is one week (Monday to Friday). During this period, students may attend lectures, case presentations and observe clinical and laboratory teaching sessions.  
  • Students on attachment will not be allowed to treat patients in the clinics or initiate/carry out any independent research project.    
  • Applicants who have been offered an attachment but are unable to make it should inform Ms. Jia En YAN (via email: yanjiaen@nus.edu.sg) at least 1 (one) month in advance, and provide reasons for the non-attendance.

Fees

  • Successful applicants for the attachment are required to pay an administrative and programme fee upon acceptance of the offer. The Faculty reserves the right to revise the fees.
  • The administrative and programme fee is waived for students from universities where FOD has a bilateral exchange agreement. Such waiver must be verified and approved by at least an Assistant Manager from the Office of Undergraduate Education and Student Affairs (UESA).
  • Payment will be collected on the first day of the posting and be made by Cash.

2nd – 4th Week January and July of each Academic Year

Maximum 1 week (Monday to Friday)

S$155.00 (Foreigners)
S$35.00 (Singaporean / SPRs)

Medical Health Insurance

Applicants should have valid health/travel insurance coverage (including COVID-19 coverage) for the period of attachment while in Singapore. Documentation of such coverage (or certified true-copy) must be produced for our verification before they begin their attachment.

Indemnity Forms

  • All students are to indemnify and keep indemnified, save and hold harmless NUS, Faculty of Dentistry and/or the National University Hospital and its employees or volunteers against all losses, claims, demands, actions, proceedings, damages, costs or expenses, including legal fees, and any other liability arising in any way from the student’s participation in the Special Elective/Exchange Programme for Overseas Visiting Students.
  • Students are required to complete an Indemnity Form as well as a Health Declaration Form. The forms will be emailed to successful applicants and the completed forms should be returned to Dean’s Office via email (Ms. Jia En YAN: yanjiaen@nus.edu.sg) at least 2 (two) weeks before start of attachment.

Attire

Students are encouraged to project a good and appropriate image by being decently attired while on campus and/or at the National University Hospital. Students may be barred from entering the clinics if they are not properly attired.

Dress/Skirts:

Dresses and skirts should be of decent length.

Tops:

Male
Long/short sleeved shirts with collars. No T-shirts.

Female
No T-shirts, skimpy tops e.g. tubes, halter necks, yoga tops, spaghetti straps or short blouses e.g. crop tops

Bottoms:

No shorts, bermudas or leggings (female).

Shoes:

For safety reasons, covered shoes are to be worn during clinical and laboratory sessions. Open toed sandals, slippers or backless shoes without straps are not permitted.

Jewellery:

Any jewellery worn must be simple and not interfere with work. When in clinics, all jewellery must comply with principles of asepsis and not cause injury to patients.

Hair:

Hair must be clean, well groomed, neatly arranged and secured to prevent it from falling into the sterile/ working field.

Male students must keep beards and mustaches clean and neatly trimmed or be clean-shaven. 

Accommodation

Applicants are responsible for arranging their accommodation.

NUS on-campus housing will generally not be available for non-NUS students during regular semester. Students may seek private housing option or external housing options such as YMCA and other student hostels.

On-Going Infection Control Precautionary Measures

  • In the event of any epidemic outbreak, the University reserves the right to cancel your placement.
  • You will be required to don the Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) during clinic observation.
  • Applicants are required to adhere to infection control guidelines set by the Ministry of Health, NUH and NUS.
