Lecture 1: From Scalpel to Console: The Rise of Robotics in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery. (45 min with 10 min Q&A)
Robotic technology is redefining oral and maxillofacial surgery by enabling minimally invasive approaches with greater precision and improved patient recovery. This talk will focus on the application of Transoral Robotic Surgery (TORS) in head and neck oncology. Dr Ghazali will be sharing her extensive clinical experience including the setting up of one of the UK’s first established TORS services. The advantages and challenges of adopting robotics in surgical practice will be highlighted, alongside its impact on training, multidisciplinary collaboration, and patient outcomes. Looking ahead, the session will consider future developments—including enhanced robotics, augmented reality, and AI integration—that promise to further transform reconstructive and oncological surgery.
Lecture 2: My Experience and Pearls of Wisdom for Women in OMS (30 min with 10-20 min Q&A)
Women in oral and maxillofacial surgery (OMS) continue to face unique challenges in a specialty that demands dual qualifications, lengthy training, and high clinical intensity. Dr Naseem Ghazali reflects on her own journey through this demanding field, highlighting the caveats, pitfalls, and lessons learned along the way. She will discuss the realities of gender bias, the pressures of balancing family and professional life, and the difficulties of career progression in a traditionally male-dominated environment. Drawing on her experience, Dr Ghazali offers practical advice on resilience, self-advocacy, and the value of building strong networks of support. She underscores the importance of mentorship and allyship in fostering inclusivity and ensuring that the next generation of female surgeons is better equipped to thrive. This session provides an honest and reflective perspective, combining personal insight with professional guidance, to empower women pursuing careers in oral and maxillofacial surgery.
(This talk is intended to be more interactive and the speaker looks forward to audience participation and sharing of opinions/views).
