Giving

Why Give?

Giving connects us to one another, enriching both society and our own lives with purpose and fulfillment.

"A blessing to give"

– Dr Kheng Ann LIM

Lim Kheng Ann Dentistry Bursary

“My family and I believe it is a blessing to give. A student’s potential should not be hindered nor constrained by financial circumstances. Hence, we hope this award will enable him or her to concentrate on studying to achieve academic excellence. It is also our wish that it will inspire in the recipient, a resolve to learn, to work hard, to hone good practical skills and clinical acumen. Perform well, do good work and benefit our people! Thank you for the opportunity to be a part of our future.”

– Dr Lim Kheng Ann, BDS Class of 1952

"A motivation for subsequent batches of students to excel"

– Adj Assoc Prof Rashid TAHIR

Rashid Tahir The Kids Dentist Medal

“When I completed my specialist training at the Eastman Dental Institute in London 20 years ago, I was given an award for being the best graduate student in Paediatric Dentistry. The award was sponsored by 3M and I received a simple certificate and a small cash award. But it meant a lot to me, and inspired me to continue learning and to seek ways to improve the way I practice my discipline of paediatric dentistry. So when I learned that the first cohort of graduate students in Paediatric Dentistry in NUS will be completing their programme and there was no prize being sponsored yet, I took the opportunity to contribute one. I thought it will be nice to award the best overall student with a medal and a sum of money. This will be a motivation for subsequent batches of students to excel in the field of Paediatric Dentistry. It is my hope that trainees in Paediatric Dentistry will do their best in learning to care for the oral health of children in Singapore.”

– Adj Assoc Prof Rashid Tahir, BDS Class of 1995

"I am happy to pay it forward"

– Dr Sheung Kin KAAN

“I understand quite a few of our students worry about family finances and their studies. I did not come from a rich privileged background and finances were tight in the house. Dentistry has been good to me and it has afforded me to do many things in life. I have donated my part-time teaching salary to the Dental Student Bursary fund for over the past decade. It has been an honour and privilege to come back to teach the next generation of colleagues.”

Dr Kaan, BDS Class of ’82

"Words express our thankfulness; action demonstrates our gratitude"

– Dr Ai Ling LEE

“I give because I am thankful for whatever I have received in life and for what I have today. Words express our thankfulness; action demonstrates our gratitude.”

– Dr Lee Ai Ling, BDS Class of 1983

"Do what you can, and give what you can afford"

– Dr George SOH

George Y Soh Scholarship

“With financial support, the recipient can focus on his or her studies; do well in the programme and go on to be successful in his or her career. I hope the recipient will in turn contribute another scholarship to the Faculty when he or she is able. In time to come, the Faculty of Dentistry will be able to nurture and sustain a pool of talented individuals for our dental fraternity.”

– Dr George Soh, BDS Class of 1980

"Partnering the Faculty of Dentistry in projects of significance"

– SDA Ex-President,
Dr Lii LIM

“The Singapore Dental Association is honoured to partner the Faculty in projects of significance. With the silver tsunami fast approaching Singapore, we applaud the Faculty for the foresight to launch the Geriatric Oral Health Care Initiatives. We will continue to play our part for all-inclusive oral health master plan for Singapore.”

– Dr Lim Lii, Ex-President Singapore Dental Association

"Start small, start today"

– Dr Benn CHUA

“It is because of the Faculty of Dentistry that I am able to find myself in a place of abundance and it is my hope that more can experience the same. Start small, start today.”

– Dr Benn Chua, BDS Class of 2020

"Always strive to help people everywhere to achieve better health and enhance their quality-of-life"

– Sunstar

“In the oral-care segment, Sunstar’s business mission is to advance collaborations with researchers and institutions, and provide high quality oral-care products and services to the general public. Sunstar has many good successes in the past decades and would like to share these achievements with our communities.

We are very glad to contribute to the Faculty of Dentistry through our donation that helps increase the scope and quality of its research. Breakthroughs in its research eventually benefit the community. Similar to Japan, Singapore is facing an ageing population that will demand better oral health products and services that will benefit the elderly in the years to come. Sunstar hopes that everyone plays a role and contributes effectively to the community.

By giving not only money but also time and effort, is a show of Sunstar’s commitment to the dental fraternity and local community.”

"To support our alma mater in nurturing more dentists"

– Dr Chin Siau NG

“I hope to use this small act to give back to the school that had nurtured me and given me all the skillsets and support to be what I am today. Dentistry is a very good profession. My wish is that my small token of appreciation would inspire our dental colleagues and graduates to commit to giving back, in big or small ways, to support our alma mater in nurturing more dentists to serve Singapore and beyond! In Chinese saying is 抛砖引⽟.”

– Dr Ng Chin Siau, BDS Class of 1992 Group CEO, Q & M Dental Group (Singapore) Ltd

"Investing in future Dental Health personnel for the public good"

– Rev Dr Louis TAY

“My first donation of $2,000 was to the Class of 72 Professorship Fund in 1997. I also gave to the Charlie Lau Kieng Heong Memorial Fund in 2001.

Giving to the Faculty through the NUS Development Office is part of my giving to charities and an extension of my giving of Tithes (10th) to the Local Church and Free Will Giving.

I was told about 4-5 years back that whilst the annual fees per Dental student in FOD was $23,500, the subsidy from the Government/State was $500,000 annually per Dental student (Dentistry being the most heavily subsidised course in NUS!).  To whom much is given, much is expected so live simply and give generously and sacrificially!

Hence giving to NUS, my Alma Mater is payback time and paying it forward in gratitude, and, investing in future Dental Health personnel for the public good.”

– Rev Dr Louis Tay, BDS Class of 1972

"Let’s make this a rippling effect"

– Dr Oy Chu EU

“I am a privileged recipient of my parents’ sponsorship to pursue dentistry in NUS.  It gives me pleasure to emulate their kindness and to give back and support the less privileged. Let’s make this a rippling effect.”

– Dr Eu Oy Chu, BDS Class of 1980

"Pay it forward whenever I could"

– Dr Keane NG

“Coming from a humble background, I have always been a beneficiary of student bursaries. The financial assistance provided to me, regardless of amount, was instrumental in providing some relief and lessened the burden I have on loan repayment. I may not have much, but I have always wanted to give and pay it forward whenever I could.”

– Dr Keane Ng, BDS Class of 2020

"Help our students and lessen their burdens"

– Dr Betty MOK and Dr Clara MOK

“When we hear about the problems some of our students face, it makes our hearts ache. We realised that quite a few of our students need support. This is especially so during the Covid -19 pandemic when parents lose their jobs, fall sick or their businesses have taken a turn for the worse.

We hope that our yearly contributions can in some way or other, help our students and lessen their burdens. Dentistry is a stressful course in itself and if we can help lessen other stresses like finances, we are happy to do so.

We certainly hope that students who have received help will be inspired to help others when they themselves become financially sound in future. Education is a gift to be treasured and if you do believe strongly in the value of education, we hope that you will be inspired to make a difference to a student’s life.”

– Dr Betty Mok, BDS Class of 1981 & Dr Clara Mok, BDS Class of 1983
