Student Life

With the Dental Club and Dental Society, experience all
that NUS Dentistry has for you beyond the classroom.

Dental Club

The NUS Dental Club is a constituent club under the National University of Singapore Student Union (NUSSU). The Club seeks to promote a vibrant and enriching student life for our students beyond the classroom, laboratories and clinics.

Notable events organised by Dental Club include:

Freshman Orientation Camp
 (FOC)

The Freshmen Orientation Camp provides new students with an opportunity to know one another as well as their seniors before the Academic Year begins. The new students also learn more about the Faculty and the University during the camp.

Rag and Flag

Since 1958, Rag and Flag has been an annual signature Freshman Orientation event in NUS. It encourages the NUS community to contribute to improving the welfare of the needy and less privileged. Rag Day is an important event in the Freshman Orientation Programme. The Rag Performances put up by the various faculties of NUS are a culmination of several weeks of considerable effort in float building, costume making, rehearsing of dance moves and ultimately putting together a riveting and coherent performance.

Flag efforts are usually held throughout the year, with various fund-raising initiatives including the Valentine’s Day and Freshmen Orientation Programme merchandise sales that culminate in an island-wide Flag Day donation collection. The proceeds collected from all these initiatives are presented to beneficiaries of the Community Chest.

Another major Flag event is the annual beneficiary engagement, where we conduct a day of oral health education for students at Pathlight School. This provides freshmen and other participants with greater insights into helping children with special needs smile.

NUSMU Exchange

NUSMU is an annual exchange event between National University of Singapore and University of Malaya, which aims to facilitate interaction between dental students as well as to uphold the sports games tradition between these two universities.

Asia Pacific Dental Students Association (APDSA) Conference

The Asia Pacific Dental Students Association (APDSA) was established in 1968 in Japan with the aim of fostering collaboration and learning among dental professionals and students across the Asia Pacific region. APDSA has since grown into a significant platform, uniting dental students and professionals from 16 countries. The association organises a diverse range of educational activities, including lectures, workshops, and hands-on sessions, designed to enhance dental knowledge and skills. This annual event provides a unique opportunity for dental students to engage with leading experts, share knowledge, and advance their understanding of dentistry in a collaborative environment.

Community Outreach

The Community Outreach arm of Dental Club encourages students to get more involved in service-oriented initiatives and to inspire a spirit of altruism. Examples of such initiatives include oral health screenings for adults in the community as well as migrant workers.

Welfare Initiatives

Dental Club seeks to foster a supportive culture within the Faculty. One of the ways it does this is through various welfare activities.

The Club together with NUSSU distribute the biannual exam welfare packs to students. These packs comprise exam essentials, simple snacks and notes of encouragement, giving our students an additional boost during exam periods.

The Dental Club Welfare Team also organises the Angel and Mortal initiative to promote the spirit of mutual peer support and encouragement, where students would write anonymously to a randomly assigned student within the Faculty and surprise each other in school with inexpensive gifts and notes of encouragement. This also promotes inter-year interactions and foster senior-junior support systems.

Dental Clinic Visits

Clinic visits are organised to expose students to real-world dental practice after graduation. It is a valuable opportunity for students to interact with the clinicians and be inspired by the work they do to improve the oral health and wellbeing of patients. The students also begin to appreciate how the knowledge they have learned is applied in clinical practice.

Dental Society

The Dental Society, established in 1949, aims to promote extracurricular activities and advance dentistry-related studies. The Society is managed by an Executive Committee elected annually and is divided into External and Internal Affairs Committees. Internally, the Society organises various activities such as sports events, welfare initiatives and an annual Dinner and Dance. These events foster an active lifestyle and mental resilience among students. Externally, the Society engages with the broader community through initiatives like the Public Health Service event, offering dental screenings and oral health education. It also encourages international exposure through the HKU student exchange programme and participation in the APDSA Congress.

Overseas Enrichment Programme (Outbound)

The Overseas Enrichment Programme (OEP) broadens our students’ educational experience as they visit other dental schools and take part in their classes there. All BDS3 and BDS4 students have the chance to spend about a week in an overseas dental school in Australia, Canada, China, Europe, Japan, United States and United Kingdom.

NUS Dentistry x OSA Wellness

The Undergraduate Education and Student Affairs (UESA) has collaborated with the Office of Student Affairs (OSA) Wellness to plan and organise activities which provide them with opportunities to take a break and try something new for a more holistic on-campus experience.
