NUS Dentistry partners with Dyson to bring novel plaque-testing methods to Dyson’s CameraJet™ toothbrush

NUS Dentistry is proud to have partnered with Dyson in enabling the design of a proxy plaque developed by Dyson, used to evaluate the performance of different jet designs. This aided in the development of the Dyson CameraJet™.

Removing plaque effectively from between teeth presents a particular challenge for oral-care technologies. To help Dyson engineers understand and optimise this process, the collaboration provided the understanding of key characteristics of oral plaque through lab and clinical studies. This enabled engineers to test different fluid-jet designs and iterate rapidly during product development without requiring a clinical trial for every design modification. The collaboration ultimately supported the testing of the CameraJet™’s conical jet, exemplifying the value of interdisciplinary collaboration in healthcare innovation.

For NUS Dentistry, working with Dyson provided an opportunity to apply dental expertise and research methodologies to a real-world engineering challenge. For Dyson, collaboration with dental researchers helped inform the development and testing of a technology designed specifically around the complexities of the oral environment.

This intersection of disciplines is increasingly important as advances in engineering, imaging, artificial intelligence, and fluid dynamics create new possibilities for oral healthcare.

The partnership also reflects the Faculty’s commitment to research that addresses meaningful challenges in oral health while embracing opportunities to work across disciplinary and industry boundaries. NUS Dentistry is delighted to have contributed to this journey and looks forward to continuing to explore new opportunities at the intersection of dental science, technology, and innovation.
