Associate Professor Stephen Hsu from the Faculty of Dentistry and fellow researchers from the Singapore Institute for Clinical Sciences of the Agency for Science, Technology and Research have discovered that infants with eczema were three times more likely to develop tooth decay at 2 and 3 years of age. The discovery was published in The Journal of Allergy and Clinical Immunology in January 2017.

PhD candidate Dr. Preethi Prajod won the IADR/Colgate Research in Prevention Award for her project presentation titled “Metagenomics of oral microbiome during pregnancy and postpartum period”. This project was supervised by Dr. Jaya Seneviratne and co-supervised by A/P Wong Mun Loke. The award was presented at the International Association for Dental Research (IADR) 2017 during the Annual General Meeting.

PhD candidate Kassapa Ellepola (PhD) won the IADR Lion Award for his work on “Streptococcus mutans GtfB augments Candida albicans accumulation in mixed-species biofilms”. This project was supervised by Dr. Jaya Seneviratne and A/P Cao Tong and was presented at the International Association for Dental Research (IADR) 2017 during the Annual General Meeting.

Undergraduates Keh Yu Jia , James Joseph Tan Bee Zhi, Tan Jian'En Julian @ Goh Julian & Ng Sing Yi won the Best Undergraduate Researcher (Group) Prize in the Outstanding Undergraduate Researcher (OUR) Prize 2016/17 with their project presentation titled “In-vitro comparison of 3-Dimensional Accuracy of conventional impressions versus intraoral and extraoral digital impressions for Implant-Supported Full-Arch Fixed Dental Prostheses”, supervised by A/P Keson Tan.

Undergraduates Goh Hui Yi Clara, Haw Sue Yi, Ren Jiamin, & Leong Jin Ni won the Best Undergraduate Researcher (Group) Prize in the Outstanding Undergraduate Researcher (OUR) Prize 2016/17 with their project presentation titled “Distribution of Gingival Smile Types and the Difference in Perception of Smile Aesthetics between Dentists and Laypeople”, supervised by Dr Fu Jia Hui.

Associate Professor Kelvin Foong received the Distinguished Service Award from the International Association for Dental Research (IADR) Southeast Asian Division at the 2017 IADR South East Asian (SEA) Division meeting. He served in the IADR-SEA Division Council in various capacities as Secretary, Treasurer, and President-Elect prior to assuming the role of President of the IADR-SEA Division from 2009 to 2011.
