Biomaterials and Tissue Engineering

Overview

The Biomaterials and Tissue Engineering Research Group focuses on advancing dental, oral, and craniofacial health through the
development of new biomaterials, technologies, and regenerative strategies. By leveraging biomaterials, stem cells, biomolecules,
and cutting-edge technologies, this group aims to improve health and promote the regeneration of dental, oral, and craniofacial tissues (dental pulp, bone, cartilage, gingiva, neurons, vasculature, and others).

Key Research Domains

  • Design and development of next-generation biomaterials with enhanced properties to modulate tissue response, decrease microbial colonization and improve clinical outcomes.

  • To develop advanced materials for the production of scaffolds for tissue regeneration, drug delivery systems, biosensors and technologies for diagnostics and therapies.
  • Development of exosome, biomolecular, and cellular therapeutic strategies for the regeneration of dental, oral, and craniofacial tissues with potential applications in broader medical fields.

  • Exploration of dental stem cells (e.g., pulp stem cells, periodontal ligament cells) for the regeneration of bone, soft tissue, and other complex structures in craniofacial and systemic applications.
  • Leverage 3D (bio)printing and biofabrication tools to construct patient-specific grafts and personalized solutions for craniofacial reconstruction.

  • Develop multicellular and multitypic tissue models that mimic native oral and craniofacial tissues for research on tissue interactions, disease mechanisms, and regenerative therapies.

  • Harness organ-on-chip technologies and advanced in vitro models to replicate oral tissues and their microenvironments, offering alternatives to animal testing and accelerating translational research.
